Canada Considers Afghanistan II
On the last page of Time Magazine the Canadian Edition, there is a wonderful essay by Deborah Jones, a BC mother who has a son who wants to contribute now to Canada by joining the military. At first, I thought it would be a a Mother's dirge, about how the military had ensared her son - and war is truly awful. Not so.
Here is a small sample of a very well reasoned plaintive note:
"..I no longer argue that the military is a last resort, that he could contribute through economics and diplomacy. He points out that he's young , that his education will take years, that he can contribute now...[thus]I know why my son is in the military. But I don't know why Canada's military is in Afghanistan. If we're protecting human rights, why not fight the genocide in Sudan ? ..."
