Wordweb

WordWeb is a delightful popup dictionary and thesaurus which is easy and useful to use in writing on Windows. This writer has long ago given up on Microsoft Word and does a good deal of penitentiary work on the Web or in programs like PHPEdit, Macromedia Flash or Jasc PaintShop Pro where the chances of having a dictionary let alone thesaurus is somewhere between slim and none.

So having WordWeb handy (free download available here) is very useful. And WordWeb is so easy to use. Not sure if you 'misspelled' a word? Then just highlight it and hit the Hotkey combination that pops up WordWeb (CTRL+F9 for me, users get to set their own Hotkey). If you have got the word wrong, WordWeb will take you to the place in the dictionary with the closest spelling. Usually a quick search uncovers the correct spelling.

However, I find I am using WordWeb more often as a dictionary and thesaurus. In the example from the screenshot above I want to make sure that 'principal' is the correct adjective in the sentence - its a shade of meaning. By pressing the adjective button on the right I get a list of definitions. Immmediately below, WordWeb supplies a list of related terms and synonyms. If I want to replace "principal"with "primary" back in my program, it is a simple click on the Replace button and the edit is done. In sum, WordWeb is fast and convenient. If you want even more word information plus look up capabilities try WordWeb Pro for only $25.
